I took this picture when my son was about seven. He had received that Radio Flyer wagon as a birthday present and was so delighted with it, he forgot about all the other gifts. He convinced his sister to get in and then he pulled her up and down the street until she’d had enough.
He gathered all the important equipment that boys need to work on “stuff” and with a little help from Dad, he made a rack to stack the big things. For years, I always knew where to find the hammer and he never relented on his request for a chain saw.
After taking a drawing break for a couple of years, this is the image I found when I opened my old portfolio of photos. It was the perfect picture to start with and I combined charcoal with my graphite pencils for the first time. The drawing really “pops” with the deep blacks that come with using charcoal.
